DMARC & DNS Management for Shopify Stores

Are you emails ending up in the spam folder? We can help you set up and manage your DNS, DMARC, DKIM, and SPF policies for your Shopify store to improve email deliverability and mitigate email spoofing, spam emails, and more.

What is DMARC and why does it matter?

DMARC helps you send secure emails to your customers to protect your store against spoofing & phishing, and help prevent your emails from being marked as spam. In 2024 major mail providers like Google and Yahoo started to require sending emails to use DMARC, otherwise emails from unauthenticated senders will be marked as spam or rejected.

  • DMARC is required to send with your own email on Shopify. If you have noticed that your emails to customers are being sent from an email address that looks something like store+123@shopifyemail.com, you need to authenticate your sending domain and set up DMARC. Sending from your own email address is important so that customers know that they can trust your emails, and emails sent with a custom domain have a 29% higher open rate.
  • DMARC helps prevent your emails from landing in the spam folder. DMARC policies instruct email servers on how to handle messages that fail authentication, such as quarantining or rejecting them, due to factors like a missing DKIM or SPF policy. By using and monitoring your DMARC, you can help maintain sender reputation and reduce the likelihood of emails being marked as spam in your customers’ inbox.
  • DMARC prevents your emails from being used for spoofing or phishing. Without a proper DMARC policy, malicious entities can send emails that look like they come from your own email address, which they typically do to steal credit cards or login details. DMARC reports tell you if your email address is being used by someone else, and setting your DMARC policy to "quarantine" or "reject" can prevent these malicious emails from landing in your customers’ inbox.
  • Check if you have DMARC enabled

How do I set up DMARC?

Setting up your DMARC for the first time can be a daunting process, but we’ve distilled the technical steps into a short guide tailored for Shopify stores below. If you would like to read a more detailed guide, we recommend Google’s DMARC guide for a more in-depth and technical discussion on setting up DMARC.

  • Before setting up your DMARC policy (SPF and DKIM) Before you start using DMARC for your domain, you should make sure you have access to your domain to add DNS records, and check you have your SPF and DKIM records set up. You can check your SPF and DKIM records here. The exact instructions for how to do this vary based on what email provider you are using, but for Google Workspace users you can follow Google’s SPF record instructions and DKIM setup instructions. For emails sent from Shopify or Klaviyo, your SPF and DKIM will be automatically set by authenticating the domain.
  • Setting up your DMARC policy. Now that your SPF and DKIM records are set up, it's time to add your DMARC policy. To do this, you will want to log into your domain, go to where you edit your DNS records, and make a new TXT record. For your next TXT record, set the "host name" field to _dmarc, and your DMARC policy will go into the "value" field. For most people, the recommended DMARC policy is:
    v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:youremail@example.com; ruf=mailto:youremail@example.com; fo=1Let’s break down what this means:
    • v=DMARC1; Every DMARC record starts with this.
    • p=none; This means nothing will happen if the DMARC check fails, other options are quarantine to put the email in the recipient’s spam folder, or reject to reject the email altogether.
    • rua=mailto:youremail@example.com; ruf=mailto:youremail@example.com; This means that all reports will go to youremail@example.com, change this to the email address that you want to receive the reports.
    • fo=1 This means that a DMARC failure report will be sent to the designated email address if either SPF or DKIM does not pass checks.
Once you have your DMARC policy added into your TXT record, save/add your new DNS record, and then your DMARC policy is now set up!
  • What do I do with the DMARC reports? With your DMARC record set up, you will start receiving DMARC reports from email providers. These emails usually have "Report Domain" in the subject line and attach a zip file, which contains the DMARC reports for you review. As tempting as it can be to ignore these emails, you should be reviewing the reports because they tell you:
    • What servers or third-party senders are sending email using your domain.
    • If your SPF and DKIM records have issues that need to be fixed.
    • If your domain is being used by malicious third-party senders.
    • How different email servers are treating emails from your domain.
By monitoring and acting on your DMARC reports, you can protect your brand against spoofing & phishing, reduce the likelihood of your emails being marked as spam, and keep your domain in good standing with major mail providers like Google & Yahoo.

Case Study - Improving Email Deliverability Rates with DMARC

Shanes Shoe Repairs is a trusted shoe repair service based in Tauranga, New Zealand. With a commitment to quality craftsmanship and customer satisfaction, Shanes serves a loyal customer base in the local community.

  • The challenge. Shanes Shoe Repairs relied on email marketing to communicate with their customers regarding repair updates, promotions, and special offers. However, they encountered difficulties as many of their emails were either flagged as spam or not delivered at all. This hindered their ability to effectively engage with their customers and impacted their business growth.
  • The solution. To address Shanes Shoe Repairs' email deliverability issues, we initiated DMARC monitoring for Shanes' email domain. By closely monitoring DMARC reports, we gained insights into how their emails were being processed by recipient email servers. This allowed us to identify and resolve authentication issues and unauthorized use of their domain, thereby improving email deliverability through identified fixes to their DNS records.
  • The outcome. Following the implementation of DMARC monitoring and setting SPF records, Shanes Shoe Repairs experienced a significant improvement in their email deliverability rates. This resulted in higher open rates, engagement, and customer satisfaction.

Why do I neeed someone to manage and monitor my DMARC reports?

You can manage it yourself for free, but many store owners we work with simply don't have the time to do that.

Monitoring your DMARC reports is important because they tell you if you have any email deliverability issues, who is sending emails using your domain, and alerts you to potential spoofing/phishing attempts.

How long will it take for my emails to be authenticated?

We usually set up your DMARC policies and authenticate your sending emails a couple of business days after getting access to your domain. Once set up, your emails will normally be sending securely within 24 hours or less.

When do I get my monthly reporting?

We typically send your monthly reporting 1-3 business days after your subscription renews each month.
