Site Speed Optimisation for Shopify Stores

Site speed is critical to SEO and sales performance, but most Shopify merchants don't know how to improve theirs. We can optimise and maintain your Shopify site speed, core web vitals, and Google PageSpeed scores.

Why does site speed matter?

Site speed is critical for Shopify stores because a slow website will lose you customers and sales. According to a study conducted by Google, for every second delay in mobile page load, conversions can fall by up to 20%. Site speed also affects your SEO rankings and reach on platforms. When measuring site speed, Shopify stores should be using the following metrics:

  • Google PageSpeed Score. Google PageSpeed measures your website speed out of a score of 100 for desktop and mobile, as well as providing you with a comprehensive list of recommended improvements to improve your site speed. You should aim for a 50+ PageSpeed score on both mobile and desktop, but ideally this will be 80 or higher.
  • Core Web Vitals. Core web vitals include a series of metrics used to determine the loading experience of your website such as FCP (First Contentful Paint), CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift), and TTFB (Time to First Byte). These metrics matter because they tell you about issues on your website beyond just how quickly it loads, such as how quickly your website responds to user clicks and interactions. You can measure them using the aforementioned Google PageSpeed tool.
  • Test your own site speed

How do I improve site speed for my Shopify store?

Setting up your DMARC for the first time can be a daunting process, but we’ve distilled the technical steps into a short guide tailored for Shopify stores below. If you would like to read a more detailed guide, we recommend Google’s DMARC guide for a more in-depth and technical discussion on setting up DMARC.

  • Optimise your images. Shopify has an image CDN (Content Delivery Network) that helps images load quickly, but most Shopify themes out of the box do not use the Shopify CDN to it's full potential. Optimise your images by making sure they are being loaded from the Shopify CDN at the right size, and lazyload images below the fold so that your website becomes interactive earlier.
  • Reduce unused CSS and JS. Unoptimised CSS and JS often has a lot of extra code or styling that you don't need. By splitting your CSS and JS into multiple files, you can make sure you only load the CSS and JS you need for the current page, and not load the code for the entire website.
  • Use Intersection Observers. If you have interactive elements that customers do not see straight away, such as a gallery of images, take advantage of Intersection Observers to only load that code once it scrolls into view for the customer.
  • Defer tracking pixels. Tracking pixels, such as Google Analytics, Facebook/Instagram, and marketing tags are common culprits for slowing down Shopify stores. A number of your marketing pixels can be lazy-loaded or deferred to a web worker to make your website load faster.
  • Consider hosting your storefront off Shopify. If site speed is really important to you, consider hosting the website that customers interact with off of Shopify. Using a framework such as React or AstroJS, you can host your website on a platform like Vercel, while still keeping the backend & admin side on Shopify. The benefit of this is you get more control over how exactly your website loads and works. There are also drawbacks to hosting your website away from Shopify, such as some Shopify apps not being compatible, so talk to an expert like us first.
  • Do apps slow down my Shopify store? Shopify apps can slow down your Shopify website if they affect the storefront (apps that only load in your admin such as logistics apps do not normally affect site speed). It's important to uninstall apps that you aren't using, and look at ways to optimise the loading times of apps that are critical to your business operations.

Got questions? - Frequently Asked Questions

Can you give us better than a 50/100 Mobile PageSpeed score?

We certainly can! 50 is just the bare minimum we know we can achieve for stores, most stores we work with score above 80, but that is dependent on the apps and other integrations you want to use.

I want a 100/100 Google PageSpeed score, is it possible?

With enough time and effort, yes a 100/100 Google PageSpeed score is possible. Within the limitations of hosting on Shopify we can usually achieve a score above 80, but for stores wanting as high of a score as possible we can explore a more custom build using NextJS, AstroJS, and Vercel to achieve a perfect PageSpeed score.
